IRAN: HISTORY
AND CINEMA
Taught by Andrew Traumann
CLASS 1: Brief history of pre-Islamic Persia, notions of Zoroastrianism, the arrival of Islam in the region, and adoption of Shiism.
CLASS 2: Iran from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century: the fall of the Qajar Dynasty; the Constitutionalist Revolution; the rise of Reza Khan; the nationalization of oil by Mohamed Mossadegh and the government of Shah Reza Pahlevi.
CLASS 3: the Iranian Revolution; the Iranian political system; the Khomeini, Rafsanjani, Khatami, Ahmadinejad, and Rohani governments. The nuclear program and tensions with Saudi Arabia and the USA.
CLASS 4: Iranian Cinema; representation of women and children in films; Censorship; o State Financing, the main directors and comments about key films.
On Wednesdays: 05/05, 12/05, 19/05 and 26/05
